Hoping for Help with Sight

Inside the Crypt

St Lucia

statuelettersSplit: The Crypt of St Dominus Cathedral

You approach the crypt entrance on the right side of the cathedral, and descend to a dimly-lit area below the cathedral.

It’s a domed, circular area, with arched openings around the edge leading to a narrow surrounding passageway.

The crypt honors St Lucia, who helps people with sight problems. It’s quite dark down in the vaulted crypt, but a statue of St Lucia in the center stands out. She’s standing on a stone altar, dressed in a red gown, and is looking up with a sweet, serene smile. The altar is strewn with a few roses and many letters, begging for help with sight problems and blindness. We can imagine that her kind face will encourage people and give them hope. I found it very touching (especially as I too have had eye problems, as have other members of our family).
